An Immersive Experience

Great historical fiction offers an immersive experience. It helps us understand historical realities and connect them with our modern lives. Excellent writing allows us to connect emotionally with the story and its characters. Sometimes, it even stops us in our tracks with its beauty or emotional impact.

Kin by Tayari Jones is a remarkable piece of historical fiction. I recently read it in preparation for a new book club focused on literary fiction. I can’t wait to discuss it! Every page offers a rich reading experience. Laughter, tears, fear, sadness, hope, pain, shocks, disgust—this book takes you on an emotional journey.

. . . mothers and daughters, friendship and sisterhood, and the complexities of being a woman in the American South" (From the book cover)

I rarely read a book twice before discussing it, but I plan to do so with Kin. Why? Because I was so immersed in every word. I want to revisit my favorite passages, especially the ones that struck me deeply. Some passages reveal brutal social realities, while others resonate with my love for words.

A Journey of Self-Reflection

As a white (Jewish) woman, I strive to be a better anti-racist. I know I’m not perfect. I’ve made mistakes along the way. But when I do, I take action by educating myself. Glorious historical fiction helps me do that. It brings to life the storytelling voices of the author, the characters, and the time period.

Tayari Jones masterfully opened my eyes to the realities of the Jim Crow South. Her writing expanded my understanding in important ways. But this book is not just a lesson about that time. It carries messages relevant to our current society. Themes of racism, misogyny, patriarchy, colorism, and sexuality are woven throughout the narrative.

Lessons for Today

While laws may have changed, the lived reality for anyone considered a minority in this country remains complex. It’s books like Kin that help us confront these realities. They challenge us to reflect on our lives and the world around us.

The power of great historical fiction lies in its ability to teach us about the past. It encourages us to create a better future. We can learn from the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us.

Thank you, Tayari Jones, for your unforgettable work. Your celebration of sisterhood and the deep lessons about our complex world resonate with me. I hope we can all embrace these insights and use our voices to advocate for a kinder world.
